Just imagine... the news media fighting over one another to interview you.

Sure, that kind of thing happens to politicians and celebrities every day. But did you know, with the right message you can become the center of the news media's attention?

Sound far-fetched? It isn't.

And it's easy when you know how.  

But be careful... there are two categories of publicity. Only one of those categories results in increased sales and more money in your pocket.

Never pay for the worthless, 'no brainer' category of publicity that many 'gurus' and over-paid publicity agents ask big fees to write for you.

"No-brainer" topics like new product announcements will appear in your local press without much effort (or fanfare). Never pay for that kind of 'publicity'. They are a great way to boost your ego. If that's what you're after.

But if you want to get publicity that puts money into your bank account you need to take a different approach.

The key to making money with your story is to format your news in a way that the media loves. When you do that correctly the media will give you all the attention you want. You will get greater credibility with your target market than advertising or any other marketing method could ever provide.

Take a look at the titles of the articles in magazines such as People, Reader's Digest, Us, and even The National Inquirer. The titles of those articles grab immediate attention.

So what is the trick to writing a dramatic release that actually gets distributed beyond the garbage pail?

I've identified 37 emotional angles that you can use. However, one of the best emotions for gaining attention is conflict. Once in a while, a little conflict is good.

Here are five fictitious subject headlines (at least I think they are fictitious) that use conflict to grab attention:

  1. Jesus enters the White House and announces forgiveness of sins for all mankind. Eliminates death, sickness, and taxes. Bush enraged. 
  2. Shell Oil accused of assassination attempt on inventor of "fuel-less" engine.
  3. Shell Oil lobbies against distribution of new "fuel-less" commercial engine.
  4. Supreme court approves bigamy. Women rights groups in protest.
  5. Paris Hilton seeks sex change operation. Tired of men gawking her.

Get the idea? Good.

Each of these examples is purposely extreme to help illustrate using conflict in a news release, not to offend.

Every product or service has an inherent "enemy"; some person, company or organization that is affected by that product or perhaps by its owner. That conflict does not have to be an external person or force. That inherent enemy can also be internal, such as expressed in the fifth example of Paris Hilton.

An Emotional Roller Coaster

The one thing you must keep in mind when creating a release is that those who sort through news releases are human beings, with human emotions. They are not unfeeling robots.

That's why your release must be written to grab their attention before you have a snow ball's chance of gaining distribution. The media believes if you grab their attention you will grab the attention of their audience too.

The media will love you.

Hit 'em Right Between The Numbers

Hey, you don't have to use just one emotional angle. You can mix and match emotional angles such as combining human interest with conflict to create a release that is guaranteed to stop the media in their tracks.

Do you think the media would stop to read that release? You bet they would. Would they run that story. Heck yeah, if it sounded even slightly true.

...big business busting. Or to put it another way, attacking whoever is on top.

The media loves stories like this. Why? Because scandal sells news.

Having a story related to exposing big businesses, celebrities, and other rich and famous (or infamous) people is the closest guarantee you could ever find for getting free publicity.

So, before you write your next release ask yourself who would be upset or concerned with your success, or the success of your product or service. Then build a news release around your answer to that question.

Call A Spade A Spade

By the way, don't bother paying for software that supposedly will write your release for you.

Every news release software program I've evaluated sucks. They are worthless for actually getting publicity that puts money into your bank account.

Why are they worthless? Because they only create the 'no brainer' types of release you read about earlier. The kind that cannot possibly generate sales.
