If you are frustrated with current sales check out my free video… the steps show exactly where small business owners are making mistakes…and what to do to fix those mistakes…
The steps in my free business video work for all for-profit businesses. It really doesn’t matter if you are a manufacturer, retailer, professional, service business owner, restaurant owner, or owner of any other for-profit company. The steps work just as powerfully. But with some modification for your market.
The video is important to view because when it comes to marketing it seems most decision makers are ego-driven. They make decisions based on a narrow focus of their industry or just plain arrogance.
The first reasons I believe companies take an ego driven approach to marketing is because they’ve been lied to by ad agents selling ads by the line, fractional inch, or dot…while the agents mislabel their cash-grabbing scams as “marketing”.
It only takes getting burned once or twice before people become painfully sensitive to listening to anything remotely attached to the M-word.
So instead of repeating those costly (and painful) experiences, business owners try to wing their marketing alone…while hoping and praying things turn out well. It rarely does. The majority of marketing fails. That’s a sad fact of life. But it doesn’t have to be.
The second reason business owners might take an ego-driven approach is because the decision makers are honestly truly arrogant. They mistakenly assume their years of exposure to their industry qualifies them to know everything there is to know about marketing their businesses. It doesn’t. Because of such close mindedness they fail to look further than their own noses for marketing ideas. Ideas proven to work again and again after hundreds of thousands of tests. To them, the world resembles The Matrix. They feel they have the power to shape “reality” around their own beliefs. At will.
We can blindly go through life feeling, thinking, and believing whatever we want to believe. But that doesn’t mean the rest of the world is going to bend over backwards for us. Life isn’t The Matrix. We can’t control everyone else on the planet simply because of the electrical impulses firing off in that little clump of gray matter between our ears.
The real world doesn’t revolve around our egos. Our egos don’t control the thoughts, feelings, or beliefs of the rest of the planet any more so than we can control the rotation of the earth itself.
Busineseses pushed along by a myopic approach to sales die.
Sure, in the old days of marketing ego-driven marketing seemed to work. But only because there were few choices. Back then buyers had to face the ‘take it or do without’ attitudes of sellers. They bought not because of that bad marketing, but in spite of it.
But today, buyers have plenty of choices. And buyers are much more informed. They are not limited by our limiting beliefs of what marketing ‘should’ be. If we fail to address their self-interests, they’ll just buy from someone else. Someone who understands what marketing really is.
This powerful, no-fluff video shows how to take a knowledge-driven approach to increasing sales, increasing referrals, and bringing in new business in this era of informed buyers.
The video isn’t about spending money on ‘branding’ or ‘top of mind awareness,’ or any other such nonsense. Those things are important. But not important enough for spending money for.
Hear me out…
Brand advertising is MEGA IMPORTANT for manufacturers and companies that sell or license through distributors, affiliates, retailers, or merchandisers. In fact, I believe branding in those circumstances is a must for manufacturers and licensors who want to compete and thrive.
Major corporations like Disney, Nike, Coca Cola spend billions on ‘brand’ ads to gain attention for their products. Those companies are not trying to make a direct sell through their ads. They are trying to drive awareness for and support the actual product sellers — who do the direct selling at local levels.
Don’t imitate those types of marketing approaches unless you are selling through retailers or distributors too. Brand/image marketing and advertising is a costly approach and is all wrong for small businesses.
The mistake many small business owners make when spending money on ads is assuming that since big companies are spending billions on junkie institutional ads, they reason small businesses should too. Wrong! That doesn’t work to keep small businesses alive — unless you plan to spend billions on ads too.
